아래 영문은 스티브 잡스의 스탠포드대학 졸업식 연설 중 일부분이다. "Death is very likely the single best invention of Life" 같은 문구가 유명해졌다. 췌장암 수술을 받고 난 이후에 한 얘기라 더 특별하게 들린다. 하지만... 어쩌면 죽음에 대해서 생각해 보고, 뭔가 준비할 수 있는 여유를 갖는 것도 사실 대단한 특권이다. 잡스는 아마 시류에 맞춰서 직장을 선택하고 인생을 사는 스탠포드 졸업생이나 그런 부류를 염두에 두고서 그런 충고를 했을 것이다. 그들에겐 적절한 충고였을 수도 있겠지만, 사실 더 많은 사람들은 하루 하루 목숨을 이어가느니라 죽음과 삶에 대해서도 생각해 보는 일 자체가 사치스러운 일이다. 잡스처럼 의연하게 죽음을 맞이하지 못할 그들에게 죽음은 더 큰 충격일 것이다. 죽음 앞에서 인간은 평등하다고 얘기하지만, 어떤 죽음이냐를 따지면 결코 평등하지 않다.

‎"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
