검색해보니 아래 얘기가 나온다. 좀 더 설득력있게 들린다. 독일어에선 freedom, liberty 같은 구분이 없고 모두 Freiheit이기 때문이다.

The Saxon root : German Freiheit => Freedom.
The Norman root : French Liberté => Liberty.

As in other occurrences of this double origin, there is a subtle distinction of freedom being more an everyday thing (because words from Saxon origin were preferred by common people) and liberty a more institutional thing (because Norman words were preferred by the ruling class). I think it becomes more apparent if one says jokingly "Whenever people demand Freedom, all what they can hope for is actually Liberty""

영어의 어원은 독일어 쪽 (앵글로?)색슨계와 불어 쪽 노르망? 계열이 있는데, 거기에서 각각 유래한 영어 단어가 freedom과 liberty. freedom은 좀 더 일상적이고, liberty는 좀 더 추상적이다. 왜냐... 독일어 계열은 평민들, 시민들이 더 많이 썼고, 프랑스어 계열은 지배계급이 선호했기 때문이다.
