우주의 역사에 대한 그리스도인 과학자들의 주장에 대한 글의 일부인데 과학/학문에 대한 좋은 표현이라 옮겨 둔다.

"Science seeks to make progress in understanding the physical world through inductive reasoning, rather than the watertight proofs found in mathematics. This means that scientific understanding advances through an enormous amount of focused, incremental efforts with many consistency checks in the context of a mutually accountable scientific community. Drawing sound conclusions about a general question such as the age of the universe cannot be done on the basis of one argument alone but requires many different independent experiments including tests that could falsify competing claims. Any conclusions, along with an evaluation of their certainty, are then made on the basis of the overall weight of the available evidence. There will often be some data that appear to disagree with the rest of the evidence; this does not automatically provide evidence for alternative hypotheses but often means that our theoretical understanding is not yet entirely complete."

특히 "consitency checks"란 표현이 와 닿는다. 그렇다. 일관성이 중요하다. 한 두가지 사례, 주장으로 섣불리 판단할 일이 아니다. 어디 과학만 그런가. 성경해석, 신학 그 자체도 그렇지 않은가. 성경의 특정 구절만 가지고 신앙의 정수를 이야기할 수 있을까? 성경의 여러 부분을 놓고서 종합적으로 판단해야 하는 것 인가? 게다가 신앙의 근거를 성경으로 제한할 수 있을까? 하나님은 성경의 언어, 문자에 제한되어 있는 분이 아니잖은가? 역사 속에서, 또 자연을 통해서 말씀하시지 않는가? 또 인간의 인식, 상식을 넘어서는 존재이고... 여하튼 일관성 체크... 다양한 접근을 통한 일관성 체크...
